Housing is an integral part of your town in Banished. A house provides a place for families to live. Citizens can eat, store food and stay warm during winter in their houses.

There are two different known types of houses, stone and wooden houses.

Stone and wooden houses can each hold up to 8 citizens at a time. The collective of citizens in a house is considered a family. Each family will conceive a few children. Family members will become unhappy if someone in their family dies; this can be offset by providing a Cemetery to bury them in.

Having spare housing is important to increasing your population. A given household will only conceive a few children before stopping. By building more houses, you increase the number of families. Generally at least two citizens (a male and a female) will begin new families in new homes. This will begin the process of making new children and increasing your population.

Wooden houses require much fewer resources to construct than stone houses, but they don't offer as good protection during winter. They can be upgraded to stone houses without the need to demolish them beforehand.

Stone House

Stone Houses

Stone houses require less firewood to heat than wooden houses and also provide more warmth, making them better homes in the long run. However, building them uses up more stone as it is used for both foundation and walls. Stone can be collected by laborers from loose rocks and boulders lying around the map or through trade or more dangerous rock quarries that require a large workforce.

Because stone houses use less firewood than wooden houses and also provide more warmth, they allow the expansion of the town without the need to produce as much firewood.

Stone houses can also be initially placed as an alternative to wooden homes.

  • If a wooden house is upgraded to a stone house the construction cost is the same but there is some material salvage value from the wooden house being upgraded.

Boarding House

Boarding houses are the last house that a player can make in Banished. It requires the most amount of resources out of the three options. Boarding houses are used as temporary housing when normal housing is not available, therefore, people will not voluntarily move into one. One boarding house is big enough to house five families.
