Stone is obtained through mining loose rock spread over the map. It is needed to build many structures in Banished.

To gather stone select the Collect Stone button, the fourth on the resources menu. You can now form a selection box with your mouse, indicating an area where citizens will collect stone from. Whether a citizen collects from a single large rock or a tight gathering of smaller rocks in a 1×1 space, they will always yield 2 stone each.

Once all the loose rock on the surface has been mined, more rock can only be obtained through mining or more dangerous rock quarries that require a large workforce.
