The Gatherer's Hut is used to define an area for collection of roots, berries, mushrooms and onions as an alternative to farming to get food for citizens.
The production rate depends on the surrounding tree density and not the age of trees.[1]
Trivia

Overview of
food collected by the Gatherer's Hut.
- The Gatherer's Hut used to be called the Gatherer's Shelter in early builds of the game.
- The efficiency of the Gatherer's Hut is increased greatly when put next to a Forester's Lodge with cutting trees turned off. (More trees = More food)
- The gatherer can only get food from mature trees, saplings don't help.
- The berries the gatherer collects can also be used for ale if you lack tree seeds.
