Stone Houses
Wooden house ready to upgrade a stone house.

Housing is an integral part of your town in Banished. A house provides a place for families to live. Citizens can eat, store food and stay warm during winter in their houses.

There are three different types of houses, stone houses, wooden houses, and boarding houses.

Stone and wooden houses can each hold up to 8 citizens at a time. The collective of citizens in a house is considered a family. Each family will conceive a few children. Family members will become unhappy if someone in their family dies; this can be offset by providing a Cemetery to bury them in.

Having spare housing is important to increasing your population. A given household will only conceive a few children before stopping. By building more houses, you increase the number of families. Generally at least two citizens (a male and a female) will begin new families in new homes. This will begin the process of making new children and increasing your population. A house must be empty or have one young resident in order to make a couple that will make children. If there are no new houses to move into, your new adults will continue to live with their parents and most likely wont find a spouse or have children.

Wooden Houses are the most basic form of housing for a town's citizens. There are 6 different styles of wooden house which can be cycled during placement by pressing F. Like other types of housing, they require heating to stay warm during the winter. A single wooden house holds one family, and up to 8 people. Houses may also store food that the occupants can eat.

Wooden houses require much fewer resources to construct than stone houses, but they require more fuel to keep warm during winter. Wooden houses can be upgraded in-place to stone houses, allowing you to reclaim some resources, however this forces all people and supplies to be removed from the house. If this is done in winter and there is no spare housing it is likely that the citizens will freeze to death.

Stone houses are an upgraded form of housing for a town's citizens. Stone houses may either be built individually, or upgraded to stone from Wooden Houses. Stone houses also have 6 styles that are entirely different from the 6 wooden house styles. The house style can be cycled with the F key.

They require less firewood to heat than wooden houses and also provide more warmth, making them better homes in the long run. However, building them uses up more stone as it is used for both foundation and walls. Stone can be collected by laborers from loose rocks and boulders lying around the map or through trade or more dangerous rock quarries that require a large workforce.

Because stone houses use less firewood than wooden houses and also provide more warmth, they allow the expansion of the town without the need to produce as much firewood.

A single stone house holds one family, and up to 8 people. Houses may also store food that the occupants can eat.

  • If a wooden house is upgraded to a stone house the construction cost is the same but there is some material salvage value from the wooden house being upgraded.

Main article: Boarding House

Boarding houses are the last house that a player can make in Banished. It requires the most amount of resources out of the three options. Boarding houses are used as temporary housing when normal housing is not available, therefore, people will not voluntarily move into one. Boarding houses are used when nomads move in and there are no more houses available. You can also use boarding houses when regular homes get destroyed by disasters, such as fires or tornadoes, and people need a place to stay. One boarding house is big enough to house five families.
